Visit Qazvin’s Chehel Sotoun Palace: A Safavid Architectural Gem

Chehel Sotoun Palace of Qazvin (not to be confused with the more famous palace of the same name in Isfahan) is one of the city’s most splendid historical buildings. Built during the Safavid era, this elegant palace served as a royal pavilion and reception hall for Shah Tahmasp I after he moved the Persian capital to Qazvin in the 16th century. The name “Chehel Sotoun” means “Forty Columns” in Persian, a poetic reference to the palace’s many columns.

Historical Significance

Constructed between 1548 and 1556, the palace was part of the Safavid royal complex known as “Sa’adatabad Garden.” When Shah Tahmasp I moved the capital from Tabriz to Qazvin, he commissioned this palace as part of his new government center. For almost 50 years, until the capital was moved again to Isfahan, Qazvin’s Chehel Sotoun served as an important venue for royal ceremonies, diplomatic receptions, and government functions.

Architectural Features

  • Main Hall: The central hall features a high ceiling supported by wooden columns, with large windows allowing natural light to flood the interior.
  • Wooden Columns: Elegant wooden columns, some with intricate carvings, support the structure and give the palace its name.
  • Decorative Elements: Despite damage over the centuries, some original decorative elements remain, including plaster moldings, woodwork, and traces of wall paintings.
  • Garden Setting: Originally, the palace was set within an extensive formal garden, though today only a portion of the garden remains.
  • Water Features: Following Persian garden traditions, the palace once featured water channels and pools that have been partially restored.

Current Function

Today, Chehel Sotoun Palace houses the Calligraphy Museum of Qazvin, displaying beautiful examples of Persian calligraphy from various periods. The museum collection includes rare Qurans, illuminated manuscripts, and calligraphy tools, offering insights into this important aspect of Persian cultural heritage.
